Do you know where you belong?
We hear it time and time again
“Be you! Be yourself! Don’t worry about what people say!”
But, how many of us actually live this way?
I mean a, “day-to-day, no shame here” sort of live, not an on the Internet “live” where you type one thing, yet do another.
I am talking about a tangible, in living color, confident and content in your own skin, and “I wear WHAT I want to wear, WHEN I want to wear it” living. You know, the go left when “they” say go right living. And, the dance to the music only YOU can hear sort of live?
Are you doing that?
I do. *Sometimes*
Note: Only muggles choose not to truly live! Kidding!
Honestly, It’s still a *tad* bit of a struggle.
I second-guess clothing choices for events, and I will still fret over whether or not I have caused someone to feel a certain way…..
My name is jihada and I am an over thinker.
Anyone who has read this post, already knows this. It’s a theme….
But these fear driven occasions are EXTREMELY rare these days, and this wasn’t always the case.
I would oftentimes wonder, when did being myself become such a bother?
It was a tough road for me, and as I mentioned, every now and again, this “path of true living,” still has its dips, and bumps.
There was a time when admitting I choose rock over other musical genres would have me beyond uncomfortable as I waited on, for what seemed like an eternity, blank stares, and scoffs in response.
Oh! And being a zealous,
card-carrying member of the Harry Potter fandom…. POTTER HEAD HERE! *waves like mad* I’m either anti-Christ, and on my way to hell, or just weird. AHAHA!
When in reality, I enjoy reading and I, like many others, can relate to a character or two. Let’s not forget my anti-stiletto heels stance.
Sorry, not sorry, but y’all I usually feel the effects of wearing those instruments of torture within 24 hours OR LESS of thinking about putting on a pair so, in my best Simon Cowell voice….
It’s a no, from me.
So where does a woman, a black woman at that, who adores anime, rock music, and Twilight marathons belong?
What table does a woman whose “top films” list begins with the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy sit?
Where does one who embraces her height, better yet, lack thereof, and will occasionally respond to a question by yelling “HODOR!” stand?
Where do I belong?
To my fellow eclectics,
Where do you belong?
Where can I go to quote 90s hip-hop, yet clutch my heart as I contemplate the complexity of the relationship between Harry Potter and Severus Snape during second breakfast?
The answer is simply,
Wherever it is you choose to be.
So, I implore you to “Be you! Be yourself! And don’t worry about what people say!” Embrace your quirks, your preferences, and hide them from no one. It can be tough at times, but if there is one thing you should never be ashamed of, is of being you.
