How will you grow in the new year? What will change or be different when next December hits and you look over how you spent the last twelve months?
“The only way that we can live, is if we grow. The only way that we can grow is if we change. The only way that we can change is if we learn. The only way we can learn is if we are exposed. And the only way that we can become exposed is if we throw ourselves out into the open. Do it. Throw yourself.”
C. JoyBell C.
You guys know, I am about that “growth life”. I strive to continually be learning, growing and trying and doing new things. Every year I want to in some capacity be better than the year before.
You may be saying, “that’s all well and good, but what can I really do at this stage in life to “grow”?”
Well I am glad you asked.
Here is my list of things you can do to grow in the new year
Make a new friend
Adulting is hard as it is. Why not find someone to help make it more fun.
Making new friends can get weird as you get older. Being in a new city is forcing me to make new friends, which I have not really done yet. At least, not outside the blogosphere. But changing the company you keep, or at least adding to it, can help you grow in the new year.
Read a new book every month
Last year I challenged myself to read a new book per month. My goal last year was to sit down and just read more. Hold a book. Smell a book. Take the time for myself to read. The way my life is set up right now, it didn’t quite work out to one per month. But overall, I did read more. Yay me!
In the new year, find something you like and read (or listen to) a new book each month.
If you like reading self help and motivational reading like me, it is always a good way to grow in the new year.
Find a new hobby
I am always stretched when I do new things.
My one friend back home would always ask me to do something I would never think to do. I always attributed it to groupon. But fooling around with her, I went to glass making and possibly even my first paint nite with her. Definitly a good time, and both things I have or will do again.
Step up your hobby game in 2017.
Create a word of the year
You are probably tired of hearing me talk about this. But really, I just can’t help myself. I can not tell you how myc I have grown int he last three years from picking a word of the year and being intentional about goal setting. If you have not already read about it and why I do it, you can check it out here. But choosing a word of the year will grow you this year for sure!
Find a way to serve/help others
Serving others is the best thing you can do to be a blessing. You’d be surprised just how much fulfillment and joy comes from serving and helping others.
Actually some of the most successful entrepreneurs that I know, a successful because they have modeled their whole business around helping and serving others.
Choosing to be of service, can stretch your growth muscle this year. Try it!
Learn a new language
Do you remember learning to speak English? No? Me either. But I don’t think it was that hard because I heard it used all around me.
But have you ever tried to learn a new language?
Man, I took Spanish in high school and boy was it an adjustment. I use to be a quitter back int he day and so I made it through Spanish 1, but I tapped out on Spanish 2. Sucked for me though, cause then in college it was a requirement. So I opted to take sign language. That one was hard too. But I had so much fun with that one. One of my professors even had us do a song performance in front of the class in sign. That was fun!
Learn a new language and stretch your brain a bit. Yup that will grow you in the new year for sure!
Mentoring is actually a form of serving if you ask me. So this one kind of goes along with the act of serving and helping others. But mentorship is so big. When you set out to help someone else grow and be better, you’d be amazed at the ways in which you will change and grow too. In fact interaction with different people in different capacity’s will always help you grow in some way. Even difficult ones if you approach them right.
It is the why parenting is the number one thing that has grown me to date.
Take the time out to mentor someone and see what kind of growth spurt you have in 2017. Not to mention it could be a great newfound relationship that could las a lifetime!
Visit somewhere new
Taking a road trip or vacation to a new place could help you grow this year too. Take the time to immerse yourself in the culture of somewhere new and you will learn a thing or two. And you may even have a good time too!
