I have a friend, she is just an amazing person; A truly God fearing woman, with a true love and heart for people type of person.
A few weekends ago, mother’s day weekend to be exact, she asked me to do the mother’s day walk with her. I just figured it was something fun to do, a reason to get out the house, a reason to be active, and lord knows I need all of the above.
But I got a little something that I wasn’t expecting, which is truly always the case with her.
“God favors men and women who delight in being made worthy of happiness before the happiness itself.”
As we were walking, I overheard a conversation that she was having with another woman she ran into that she knew. It was not new information to me that she was sharing with the lady; it was all things that we had spoken about before.
But for some reason I just heard her more loudly and clear on this day.
I may have also realized that in conversation I may not be as active as a listener as I’d like to think I am.
Talking about Favor
They were talking about favor.
You know we all hear and have even used the clichés, “the favor ain’t fair” and whatnot.
Come on you know you have said it.
A lot of times we use the word favor as this imagery of God just dropping down blessings upon you that you didn’t even deserve.
But they were both talking about this in the context of their careers. The preparation they did and sacrifices they’d made in order to position their steps to achieve these roles that they desired. And even eventually ended up working in.
They got me to thinking, as I have been just kind of stagnant and unmotivated in my own career, “what am I doing to prepare myself for the next blessing that God is working on just for me.”
A blessing is not just God dropping off this magical blessings dust on you that makes you get everything that your heart desires.
God Given Favor
In actuality, it’s God saying that he can take the circumstances of our life and make it so amazing that it will draw more near to him. All while he lets us reap the rewards of it. Because really, with our sinful selves, do we really deserve even half of what we receive?
But what I realized in listening to them talking about preparation and whatnot is that more than half of us miss what God has in store for us because we won’t prepare ourselves for his best.
“When you saw a wounded who cry out for help,
you may be the one sent by God to bring a favor.”
Working For Favor
They spoke about working hard even when they didn’t want to, or taking a job that no one else wanted to take in order to give themselves an opportunity to work hard and shine with the motivation being that they aren’t serving people, or even motivated by trying to provide for their family.who are you really working for when you clock in? It got me thinking if you go to work with the attitude that it’s not about how much this company is going to deposit in your bank account in the next two weeks. It’s not about how much your boss does or does not like you. Or even, how fair they treat you. It’s not about issues with your coworker. Or you know whatever issues that you may have. But more about going to work to be a blessing to someone. To serve the Lord to show the people around you what Christ looks like. What sacrifice looks like. And what hard work looks like when you are serving and working for the Lord.
It’s a heck of way of thinking about it. But what if every person working, worked with that as their motivation? From the person serving you your food at the local fast food joint. To the the cashier at the local drugmart.
It’s similar to the principal in marriage that says that you are not just loving your spouse. You are showing your love for the Lord in your marriage and honoring, respecting and even submitting. Fix your face if you even slightly twisted it at the mention of submission, lol.
It means that even on what you feel is a bad day, what you use to get you through is your love and reverence for the Lord.
The Lord is continually giving us his best. In turn he deserves so much more. If you give your best and actually work hard, prepare, learn, and even love, imagine the “favor” that could be upon your life in your career; we won’t even get into applying that to every other area of your life as well right now. But consider the thought for just a moment.
You see favor is not fair. But it also doesn’t just fall in your lap via the magical blessings dust either.
